Cara Mckinnon Crawford is one of Scotland’s most established artists. A graduate of Glasgow School of Art, her bold, but sensitive mastery of oil paint result in beautiful interpretations of some of the country’s most iconic land and seascape.

Ken has been painting full time since 1990. He lives in Innerleithen in the Scottish Borders. “Most of my work is rooted in my love of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland.”

“I am fascinated by and grateful for the endless visual inspiration I receive everyday on my doorstep. I use direct brushstrokes in my work and an exciting colour palette. I aim to produce ‘truthful paintings’ that really get to the heart or essence of a place.”

May 2022 Featured Artist – Stuart Herd
Stuart Herd is inspired by the varied and dramatically changing landscape of his country. In 2002 he returned to Scotland and his painting took precedence. He started exhibiting in galleries while working as a picture framer, but within a few years he was working full time on his paintings. He now displays in selected galleries as well as his own in Tarbert, Inveraray and Ullapool.

“You can often find me walking in barren (but beautiful) English, Welsh and Scottish countryside, hills, and mountains with my wonderful map-loving partner. I take as many photographs as I can, and use these images as well as memory to recreate the atmospheric beauty of these landscapes back in my home studio.”

Allison is one of our most popular gallery artists. Allison lives and works in Edinburgh and spends holidays on the west coast and on the islands where she finds inspiration for her beautiful beach scenes.

Clare is an illustrator based in Inverness. She is inspired by the magical scenery and life lived in The Highlands and surrounding countryside.

I work in an unusual and intriguing mixed media that combines contemporary digital illustration with traditional pen & ink so no two are the same.

Clare is an illustrator based in Inverness. She is inspired by the magical scenery and life lived in The Highlands and surrounding countryside.

September 2021 Featured Artist – Rosanne Barr
Rosanne paints instinctively, inspired by shifting skies or a distant light or colour on the horizon. Using large brushes she swiftly creates a sense of movement in each painting. Paint is applied directly onto the Canvas, creating a fresh appearance often with vivid colours. Rosanne builds up layers producing interesting textures and depth.

Margaret Evans is internationally known for her portraits in oil and pastel, and a member of the Portrait Society of America featuring regularly in the International Artist Magazine.

June 2021 Featured Artist – Allison Young

Allison Young graduated from Edinburgh in 1988 with a First, then spent a year studying in Lodz in Poland. From then on she has been living and painting in Edinburgh, and now has a studio with WASPS at Dalry.

May 2021 Featured Artist – Dot Walker

Dot settled in Inverness and loves the dramatic skies of the highlands. Her palette is warm and vibrant, with a bias to reds and ochres, which complement the rugged landscape here. Dot has gone from strength to strength, now exhibiting widely in Scotland and beyond.

After leaving college Peter lived and worked on the Isle of Skye. He has since moved back to Nottinghamshire but continues to paint these atmospheric Skye landscapes.

Ken has been painting full time since 1990. He lives in Innerleithen in the Scottish Borders. Most of his work is rooted in his love of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. “I enjoy the wide open spaces of the coasts and mountain tops of the region and this is reflected in my work. “

Janet McCrorie is a figurative artist with a keen interest in depicting movement. Her artistic style describes the shapes made by the body in action and encourages the eye to move around the painting. Her main subject is Scottish dancing.

“My simple and sincere objective is for honesty in my work in making paintings that convey the exhilaration I feel as I explore the Highland land, sea, wind, rain and sun. I am thrilled if others can feel it too, but it requires no analysis or justification. I am a painter, not a writer.”

Sheryl is an award winning contemporary landscape artist. Dubbed “the Turner of the North”, Sheryl’s vision of tempestuous skies and chaotic landscapes has earned her international acclaim. Sheryl’s unique vision of the dramatic light penetrating the vast skies is recognisable as her distinctive style.

August 2020 Featured Artist – Rosanne Barr

“This group of paintings features coastal seascapes , inspired by the west coast , Hebridean Isles and Orkney, as always these are not real places they are imagined, for the viewer to be reminded of places they love.

With lighthouses making an appearance in a couple of the paintings, to give a focal point to the compositions, and because I just love the romantic idea of a lighthouse! There are also a couple of inland scenes, inspired by the dramatic drive through Glencoe, these pieces are broody and aim to capture the changing light and atmosphere of the highlands.”

Stuart Herd is inspired by the varied and dramatically changing landscape of his country.
He was born in Scotland in 1971, and after growing up in England and briefly attending Amersham College of Art he started a career in photography whilst regularly travelling north to Scotland to explore and capture the landscapes.

“This collection of work is born out of my strong love for these wonderful and magnificent places.
Each of these places holds a special memory in my heart, and I continue to visit most of them as often as I can. Because of this, I have found myself drawn to paint then again and again.
Like the Scottish weather, every time I paint one of these places there is something a little different in the colours and the energy. Sometimes they are bright and lively, and other times they are calm and moody.

“This little collection was the result of several trips to the islands in the last year or so. The way colours react when placed side by side is always my main passion, and I strive to achieve both harmony and resonance while exciting the eye with pure and vivid colour. This is not always easy and it’s so tempting to stick to one or two combinations of colour that have proven to work! On this occasion, though, I’ve picked a body of work to show the wide variety of palettes available that I use and hopefully still achieve this goal!”

“This collection of artwork has been inspired by Scottish wildlife. When painting, I always apply the paint first in loose expressive strokes before using ink to draw in the details on top. This ‘backwards’ technique allows an element of movement within the work, which I think helps to show the character and quirkiness of each animal.”

Holroyd Gallery is delighted to exhibit a new collection or work by Peter Dworok. “I have always had an interest in the landscape, especially dramatic landscapes, those that have an underlying threat to human settlement. The paintings, in oils, reflect the colour and tone that the weather brings to the landscape and the seasonal changes in mood and light.”
