Katherine Sutherland

Katherine Sutherland is a visual artist, living and working in the Scottish Highlands.

“I am fascinated by and grateful for the endless visual inspiration I receive everyday on my doorstep. I use direct brushstrokes in my work and an exciting colour palette. I aim to produce ‘truthful paintings’ that really get to the heart or essence of a place.”

I took an interest in Art from a very young age. Friends and family tell me my textbooks were empty, but the covers were beautifully painted and decorated. I was more at home in the Art department than anywhere else in the school. This love of the Arts continued throughout my Nurses training in Edinburgh. I found myself spending more time in art galleries than in the lecture theatre.

Marriage and motherhood did nothing to lessen my enthusiasm. In 2014 I took a leap of faith and concentrated on my painting full-time. Now I am enjoying the daily challenge of devoting my time to a profession I love. I try not to be afraid of failure and approach each work I undertake with vigour and passion, not restricting myself to one medium.
