Faith Holmes was born in Kent in 1967
“I have always loved drawing and painting, and looking at, into and through things. I used to lie on my back and look at clouds or sit motionless watching out of the window for many hours as a young child. Although being awarded a place at art school in my teens, I did not go. Which was probably a good thing.
Instead, I worked in Glasgow for ten years until returning to full time education to study literature and theology. In all this time I drew very occasionally in the holidays or evenings – small pictures as gifts for friends and family members.
After marrying late, in 2005 (a scientist!), I began to paint in oils for the first time, stopping two years later after we had our child. Now that she is older, I am starting again.
Apart from the visible world around me (mainly the Isle of Mull), I am influenced more by reading, thinking, and the things I listen to while painting. Even in this short while, the painting is changing, with some pictures taking a more impressionistic turn. I still feel I’m just beginning, with many techniques to be discovered, and an infinity of truth to explore and interpret. I am happy at the thought of that. “
